  六、报告摘要:

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a life-long neurodevelopmental disorder affecting around 1% of the population worldwide (around 67 million people). It is characterized by children from an early age exhibiting varying degrees of impairment in social communication and interaction and also repetitive behaviors, with nearly a third of those affected developing little or no language. Reliable diagnosis is currently difficult to make before 2 years of age and there are no approved front line treatments for the core social dysfunction symptoms, with the only option being lengthy behavioral training and therapy. In this lecture I will outline how different multidisciplinary research approaches involving psychiatrists, psychologists, neuroscientists, geneticists and computer scientists, are being used to establish key behavioral, molecular and brain structural and functional indices as markers to aid both diagnosis and the development of novel therapies. I will then detail how translational research work from animal models has helped to establish several novel therapeutic targets which play key roles in controlling social behavior, and describe progress of my own group and internationally in working towards developing different protocols and strategies for successful treatments in young autistic children.
